Ted's Montana Grill Opening 5-12-14 in Hartford CT

Hankering for a great steak? I have great news for you!

Ted’s Montana Grill, the classic American grill is coming to Hartford CT!

Opening on May 12th in the historic Front Street District on 35 Front Street in downtown Hartford, the restaurant will be 4,600 square feet and will seat 160 guests.

This is the second Ted’s Montana Grill in Connecticut; the first location is in The Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk in South Windsor.

Co-owner and renowned media entrepreneur George McKerrow reports,  “Downtown Hartford is experiencing a renaissance, and we want to be a part of this close-knit community,” and continues to say. “Hartford has an interesting dynamic of strong businesses, convention goers, students and a new generation of young entrepreneurs and their families.”

John Halpin, proprieter of Ted's adds, “Hartford is one of the oldest cities in the nation, and it has a strong green initiative and movement to recapture life on the riverfront."  Halpin will lead a staff of 50 employees and three managers at the new Front Street restaurant. “I think that Mark Twain would be very happy to see Ted’s Montana Grill opening up downtown. He’d definitely walk along the river and be a regular on one of our bar stools,” Halpin laughs.

So...what's on the menu at Ted's Montana Grill?

Popular appetizers include Salt-N’Pepper Onion Rings, fresh-cut potato chips with creamy ranch onion dip and St. Phillip’s Island Crab Cakes with fresh guacamole and coleslaw. Classic dishes include steaks, meatloaf, pot roast, pecan crusted trout, cedar plank salmon and beef and bison burgers. Meals are served with sides ranging from fresh-cut fries to Aunt Fannie’s squash casserole. But no meal is complete until you try some of Ted’s homemade cookies or fudge brownies.

Did somebody say BROWNIES??? YUM! Count me in!

From traditional comfort food to unique signature dishes, all meals will be made from scratch fresh daily - nothing frozen or microwaved. Chefs only use fresh Certified Angus Beef, National Bison Association-certified bison, all-natural chicken and premium seafood. Ted’s Montana Grill also believes in fresh, sustainable, organic and locally grown ingredients.

It sounds like Ted’s will be serving time-honored favorites in a relaxed setting reminiscent of the 19th century American frontier.

Inside the restaurant will certainly be unique! The design of the Hartford location is inspired by old western saloons, with all the romance and classic touches that make it feel luxurious, but in a casual, warm way. The décor will feature Mahogany paneling, pressed tin ceilings, brass fixtures and beautiful crown molding.

The restaurant will feature an open kitchen and a dining room that seats 120 people in cozy booths and round tables. The bar seats 25 people and will serve handcrafted cocktails, beer and wine.
The Big Sky Spirit goes beyond just atmosphere though.

Here's the really neat part!

Ted’s Montana Grill will incorporate many eco-friendly technologies and practices as it does in their other locations, from low-voltage, compact fluorescent light bulbs to menus printed on recycled paper.

Green restaurant products include: paper straws, wooden drink stirrers, cornstarch to-go cups, recycled coasters and biodegradable to-go cutlery and cardboard containers. Kitchen staff follow specific “fire up/fire down” guidelines to save on electricity, use energy-saving equipment and utilize griddle cook tops that lower the level of grease particulates released into the air. Restrooms feature water-efficient fixtures and biodegradable powder Boraxo soap.

“Sustainability and recycling is ingrained in nearly every aspect of our restaurant,” says Halpin. “Our guests are just as environmentally committed as we are, so they really appreciate the dedication it takes to be responsible. It takes time, research and effort and to be good stewards of the Earth. But it’s worth it.”

About Ted’s Montana Grill
Inspired by the pioneer spirit of the American West, Ted’s Montana Grill is committed to serving honest food served with genuine hospitality. The menu is known for its modern interpretation of hand-prepared, 100 percent fresh classic comfort food. The chef-inspired menu features the finest cuts and best selection of bison, including high quality, flavorful steaks and award-winning burgers amongst a variety of other unique menu items. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ted’s Montana Grill was co-founded in 2002 by Ted Turner, the media entrepreneur, environmentalist and philanthropist, and award-winning restaurateur, George W. McKerrow. Celebrate Spring with a pair of Jack Johnson by Feelgoodz Flip Flops

Spring!

Time for warm weather, sunshine, beachwear, and flip flops!

And today is Earth Day, a day where everyone is more ecologically-conscious. So what would be better than something that combines flip flops and ecology? And no one does that better than Feelgoodz Footwear.
Jack Johnson by Feelgoodz
Slimz

Do you know about Feelgoodz footwear? They're comfortable and sustainable and made from all natural products.

This spring, Feelgoodz is launching a new line of  “Jack Johnson by Feelgoodz”, an exclusive flip flop collection designed in collaboration with renowned musician Jack Johnson with all proceeds benefiting the Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

This foundation, founded by Jack Johnson and his wife Kim, supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii.

The Foundation's mission is to provide students with experiences that will enhance their appreciation for and understanding of their environment

The Jack Johnson collection will consist of one men’s style and one women’s style, with colors and designs complementing Jack Johnson’s latest album, From Here to Now to You. This partnership is a natural fit for Johnson, who wears Feelgoodz footwear regularly and loves the brand’s dedication to using natural materials.

Jack Johnson by Feelgoodz
Kinderz

Feelgoodz was founded by Kyle Berner while backpacking through Thailand. After the flip-flops he was wearing one night broke, he began his search for a new pair. He came across a pair hanging from an interesting display and found them to be the most comfortable pair of shoes he had ever worn. Made from natural rubber, the flip-flops proved to be both comfortable and sustainable. The idea of producing these particular shoes drove him to create Feelgoodz in New Orleans in 2008. In 2012, the company relocated to Raleigh, NC where Feelgoodz continues to support farmers and artisan cooperatives around the world.

Please visit www.feelgoodz.com for more information and to purchase your pair of Feelgoodz flip flops!

The Grog Shoppe for Burgers in Schenectady NY

We recently took a three-day getaway to Schenectady New York to visit our niece Nicole at Union College. We couldn't have picked a better time to go! The Union College Men's Hockey team was competing that weekend for the Frozen Four NCAA Championship in Pittsburgh PA, and the entire campus was in a festive and celebratory mood to commemorate the occasion! And THEY WON!!

One place we always go when visiting is the Grog Shoppe on the corner of Erie Boulevard and State Street in downtown Schenectady.

The Grog Shoppe in Schenectady New York

A typical college town restaurant, the Grog Shoppe is known for their hearty food and appetizers at affordable prices. We've never been disappointed with the food there and always order one of their creative burgers.

A little known fact about the restaurant location and Erie Boulevard in general, is that it was once a section of the Erie Canal System. In 1925 it was filled in and renamed "Erie Boulevard" and is now a major thoroughfare in the downtown district.

On this visit we skipped the appetizers and ordered a couple of the Grog's famous hand pampered (hand formed) half pound freshly ground beef burgers.  Burgers come with chips and a pickle and you can request fries for an additional $.95. That's right! Only 95 cents! (prices April 2014)

Nicole and I both ordered the Grog Burgers with sweet potato fries. The Grog Burger is made with Bacon, Melted Swiss Cheese, a slice of Grilled Pineapple, exotic spices, and their own special sauce, served on a grilled roll. Crazy as a pineapple sounds on a burger it really tastes wonderful adding a subtle sweetness to the dish.

The Grog Burger
Yes, it's as good as it looks!

The Cowboy kept it simple and ordered the New Yorker Burger, made with melted cheese and bacon, with a side of fries.

The New Yorker

The Grog Shoppe serves everything from appetizers to dinners and burgers and deli-sandwiches. It's really got something for everything you're hankering for. Check our their menu HERE.

If you're in Schenectady - be sure to stop in!. It's a kitchy little place and a fun place to visit. Prices are great with burgers around $6.95 and dinners from $11.00 to $19.95.

The Grog Shoppe Dining Room

Off street parking is available next door and they're right across from the Schenectady train station.

The Arezzo Ristorante: Fine Food with a View in Westport CT

Media Sampling

Now that spring is here, as well as warmer weather, I can't wait to share one of the best places to have great food and delicious cocktails with a view --- the Arezzo Ristorante in Westport CT.

The Arezzo Ristorante in Westport CT

Located on River Street in Westport CT, the restaurant is situated on the Saugatuck River, and promises to be a hit for those who want to dine and drink al fresco this summer. Just look at that amazing view!

The Patio overlooking the Saugatuck River

The views are spectacular, as is the food. And service is just as amazing. Everyone from the fabulous bartender to the servers are knowledgeable and full of information about the restaurant history, food, ingredients, and preparation.

We started our sampling with some cocktails and appetizers at the bar. The restaurant is currently in the process of re-vamping their specialty cocktail menu, but here's some of the items we tried.

The French Kiss Martini, the Cucumber Cocktail, and the Lemon Pop Martini. Although I loved both the martinis I have to admit that the Cucumber Cocktail with the Cracked Black Pepper on top was a refreshing way to start the evening. This will be a great cocktail to sip on on a warm summer evening.

Left: A French Kiss- the  French martini with Proseco
Middle: The Cucumber Cocktail with organic cucumber vodka and St. Germain topped with cracked black pepper
Right: A Lemon Pop Martini made with Purity Vodka and Limoncello and topped with Proseco

We then sampled some of the bar food available. Items were artfully arranged, garnished beautifully, and were all wonderful. My favorites were the shrimp and scallop skewer served with the perfect grilled sear with aromatic herbs, and of course, the lobster arancini.

The Margherita pizza, made with fresh tomatoes and basil, with homemade mozzarella.

The Focaccia Robiola di Arezzo, so delicious and drizzled with an amazing and earthy white truffle oil.

The Lobster Arancini with a saffron aioli and lemon for dipping. Delicious!

Rosemary Marinated Grilled Shrimp and Scallop Skewers

Italian Sausage and Roasted Pepper on Skewers

We then moved on to the dining area for some appetizers, wine and dinner. We started with Cavatelli ai Piselli, a homemade pea ricotta with hot and sweet sausage ragout, Risotto made with fresh porcini mushroom and truffle oil, and Short Rib Tortellini made with a braised au jus sauce.

Front: Cavatelli,   Middle: Risotto,   Back: Tortellini

Each of these dishes were wonderful! The creamy risotto, the flavorful cavatelli, and the the hearty robust tortelli. So, so, good!

For dinner we sampled both by land and by sea with a New Zealand Lamb Chop and a beautiful Halibut. Two things I rarely attempt at home and love to enjoy when I'm dining out. The halibut was excellent with a crispy sear, and the lamb was a perfect medium rare enhanced with the fragrance of  infused rosemary.

Paired with our dinner we enjoyed a hearty red and semi sweet Italian white wine.

White: Vento Vermentino Toscana - a semi sweet Italian white wine
Red: Pasetti Fonte Romano

Pan Seared Halibut
Caponata Puree, Fregola, and Vegetables

Roasted New Zealand Lamp Chop
Spinach, Tomato, and Yukon Gold Potatoes
We ended the evening with not one, not two, but THREE happy endings. Two delicious desserts of panna cotta and nutella pizza and a delightful after dinner dessert martini!

The Double Chocolate Martini
Made with Godiva Chocolate Vodka, Frangelica, Creme de Cacao, and Half & Half
Vanilla Panna Cotta
Fresh Berry Compote
Amazing Nutella Pizza
Topped with Powdered Confectionery Sugar

I cannot say enough good things about all the items we sampled, and surprisingly, although I'm not a a Nutella fan, the Nutella Pizza dessert was so incredibly good. I sampled it only to be polite and ended up going back for more.   And more.   And MORE!  Make sure you order it and any or all of the other delicacies we sampled!

My thanks to the wonderful staff who were all so helpful and informative and to the management and marketing team for hosting this delicious event!

See you on the waterfront at Arezzo in Westport!

Spring, Summer, Winter, or Fall - Great food and wonderful views!

Pepe's Pizzeria in New Haven - and beyond!

Media Promotional Sampling

I have never lived anywhere in Connecticut other than New Haven County. In fact, I've lived in only two towns my entire life. Both towns are a short five minute drive from downtown New Haven.

And yet, I had never been to the iconic pizza parlor that set the standards for New Haven Style Pizza in Connecticut, Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana ..

Consistently voted one of "The Best Pizza Spots in the Country" by Food and Wine, and recently voted the #1 Pizza by the Daily Meal, Pepe's is known for their iconic tomato "pie" and their white clam pizza! Pepe's is located in the heart of New Haven's "Little Italy" on Wooster Street in historic Wooster Square.

On my very first visit to Pepe's, I had the pleasure of sitting down for a late lunch with Gary Bimonte, grandson of "old reliable" Frank Pepe. What I enjoyed most, besides learning about the family's nearly century old traditions of pizza pie making, were the heartfelt stories he told about growing up in the restaurant, and the family meals he shared with aunts, uncles, and cousins around the dinner table. To me, that's one of the best things about food, sharing and enjoying it with those you love, and breaking bread with old and new friends. Read more about Pepe's origins and history HERE.

The Pepe family history is rich with tradition, but the one thing that has remained the same is FAMILY. Be it the offspring of various family members cooking in the kitchen, cleaning tables, or what have you, the family is still involved in varying degrees to Pepe's today. Gary likely has the best job of all, that of quality assurance, and he spends his days traveling to the many Pepe's locations, ensuring the the same quality that originated in New Haven CT, is available in all seven of Pepe's current locations, the two New Haven locations, and in CT's Fairfield, Danbury, West Hartford, Mohegan Sun,  and NY's Yonkers. (Rumor has it that Pepe's is currently scouting locations in Boston's Brookline neighborhood, and a shoreline location in Rhode Island, rumors that Gary could neither confirm or deny.)

And what's on the menu at Pepe's? Pizza, pizza, and more pizza! A fresh garden salad is also available, in addition to Foxon Park Soda, Beer and Wine. See the entire New Haven Pepe's Menu HERE.

Be sure to visit a Pepe's location near you. And if you have the opportunity, visit the original Pepe's in New Haven, CT.

Here's some of the pics from our visit!

Pepe's Pizza and another New Haven staple - Foxon Park Soda
White Birch Beer and Apizza is a match made in pizza paradise!
The tomato pie pictured below is classic Pepe's pizza at its best. Simple fresh ingredients guarantee an equally fresh taste. Crisp thin crust. Absolutely delicious.
The one, the only, original Pepe's Tomato Pie
Sliced Tomato, herbs and spices, and grated parmesan cheese

Ahhhhh. Moving on we sampled the white clam pizza made with fresh clams and garlic, lots of garlic! Succulently sweet clams and zesty garlic make the perfect pairing on pizza!

The White Clam Pie
Fresh clams on the classic New Haven thin crust pizza
Thin and crisp - but never burnt on the bottom
The secret? The only thing that we could learn was that the dough is a bit "wetter" than norm.

I always thought that New Haven pizza couldn't be duplicated anywhere because of our unique water...but Gary assured me they worried about that too, and test the water in every location!
