Cirque Éloize ID at Foxwoods Resort and Casino CT

Social Media Promotion

Last week we had the opportunity to travel up to Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket CT to see the amazing Cirque Éloize ID show at Foxwood's Fox Theater.

The show is an incredible blend of hip-hop, break-dancing, contortionists, acrobatics, juggling, cycling, aerialists, and rollerblading, set to the beat of a hip urban soundtrack created by composers Jean-Phi Goncalves (Beast) and Alex McMahon. Yup! All that - in one action-packed show!

Cirque Éloize, a leader in the contemporary circus arts since 1993, has presented thousands of fun-filled and innovative performances around the world. The troupe, consisting of 15-22 performers with international backgrounds, gives a heart-pumping, jaw-dropping, breath-holding, beautifully choreographed show that will dazzle audiences of all ages.

The Cirque Eloize show at Foxwoods Resort Casino is family friendly with something for everyone! The name "Cirque Eloize" translates to "heat lightening" and the performance truly is electrifying!

We were part of a special media event that got to meet the performers and watch them showcase their talents prior to the show! I learned how to juggle!

We learned so much about these performers backgrounds. Our juggling instructor actually has a degree in juggling! We also got to learn some trampoline tricks, and see the backstage setting where it's all about organization and timing!

Here's one more photo of our group with performance troupe on stage before the show.

The Fez in Stamford to Reopen in mid-August

The Fez is Getting a Whole Lot Fezzier
Stamford’s Spice Route Restaurant and Live Music Locale
Prepares to Re-open in Just a Few Weeks!

It was 2010 when The Fez introduced its Moroccan inspired menu, eclectic wine offerings,  underground vibe and a steady stream of diverse musicians to Stamford’s thriving downtown neighborhood. This past June, amid the completion of much of the The Fez’s Summer Street neighbors apartment house construction, The Fez began a summer-long renovation process to enhance The Fez experience that patrons have grown to love.

“The original inception of The Fez laid down the foundation, “says Eric Monte, creator and operator of The Fez, “Now it’s time to take things to the next level. We are not reinventing the wheel here – we are just making things a whole lot Fezzier.”

A refreshed brand was first on the agenda, which encompasses The Fez’s signature fez hat and scimitar sword, and will now introduce the iconic fez hat clad monkey, a traditional companion to the Turkish accordion players. Patrons will also be able to navigate through a brand new web site, complete with menus, event information and an in-depth live music calendar.

The Fez’s interior transformation includes a stunning dining room, bar, and performance space, framed in vibrant red walls, eclectic artwork, and posh drapery. The bar capacity has nearly doubled in size and an added bar section has been created stage side where music enthusiasts can pull up a front row seat while enjoying drinks and dinner. The stage area is enhanced with contemporary lighting and the entire space is wrapped in a state of the art sound system.

The Fez’s unconventional approach to its organically grown music scene is a product of Eric’s music biz background. The dexterity of the talent line-up will not only continue to entertain and surprise people, the music program is now under the direction of a house band, The Casablanca Project, led by accomplished musician Bobby Fiorito. For bookings, bands may contact Bobby directly: Booking@FEZEG.com

Patrons can look forward to more of The Fez’s vibrant Moroccan / Mediterranean cuisine which takes it cues from The Spice Route, the name given to the network of sea routes where fragrant spices were traded from the west coast of Japan, through the islands of Indonesia, India, the Middle East, and across the Mediterranean to Europe. The menu features a large selection of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes, in addition to customer favorites and some new items that Chef Shelby is extremely excited to prepare. Bold and flavorful dishes include; Baba Ganoush, a classic Turkish roasted eggplant puree served with Fez pita chips; Spanakopita “Raviolis” filled with spinach and feta cheese, wrapped in filo dough with toasted pine nuts and kalamata olives;  Shrimp Falafel, house made falafel stuffed with shrimp and served with a trio of dipping sauces: artichoke sauce, fennel dip and harissa mayo; Grilled Octopus with harissa mango sauce and fried fava beans; Vegan Pizzet topped with arugula and dried apricots and drizzled with Moroccan Aragon oil; Chicken Aroub over sumac braised onions and walnuts and topped with toasted pine nuts; Filet of Tenderloin (two 4 ounce filets) served napoleon style with potato cake and an olive truffle drizzle; and Charmoula Wild Salmon cooked in an aromatic Moroccan spiced rub and seasoned sauce, served with saffron couscous, cracked green olives and fennel salad.

“The wine list will evolve constantly and we have crafted an extended beverage program which will highlight our popular seasonal spirit infusions and lend itself to even more food pairings,” promises Eric.

Join The Fez for its grand re-opening and unveiling on August 15 and celebrate Eric’s, “Papa Fez” Birthday! Opening night will feature the Casablanca Project and The Juicy Grapes, along with special guest appearances from Bobby and Eric’s talented musician friends.

Visit the Gelston House in East Haddam CT

Dining in East Haddam CT!

Last week we took a short 'road trip' to East Haddam Connecticut to visit the Gelston House, a historic restaurant overlooking the Connecticut River, located next to the Goodspeed Opera House.

Left: Historic Picture Postcards from the Gelston House
Right: The Gelston House today

Originating as the Riverside Inn, built by Jabez Chapman in 1736. The Inn was operated by the Gelston family from 1776 through 1825. It was next owned by Joseph Goodspeed and the current building was erected by the Gelston Hotel Company, a corporation formed by a number of East Haddam residents and headed by George Gelston. This was known as the Gelston House and later the Swan Hotel.

Fast forward to 2015 and the restaurant still retains its historic charm with all the modern amenities. It features indoor dining in a variety of rooms, a riverside light filled formal dining room, a pub type lounge, and an informal booth filled dining area.

The best part for me was the seasonal dining outside, in a large covered patio area, and an adjacent sun-filled open deck with umbrella covered tables. The perfect place to enjoy cocktails and lunch or dinner on warm days in spring, summer, and throughout the fall.

Best of all, the Gelston House is open year round!

Cocktails at the Gelston House

Of course we started with a cocktail from the Gelston House's extensive specialty cocktail menu. I ordered the Key Lime Martini, pictured below, left, that I sipped and enjoyed while we perused the patio and dining room menus.

Appetizers and Small Plates at the Gelston House

Then we moved on to appetizers! Because there were seven us dining we got to sample a wide variety of starters. My favorites were the Blackened Scallops that had a great flavor to their sear, and the Bang Bang Shrimp. Word of note,  BangBang Shrimp are (currently) not on the menu, but Chef is happy to please, and if there is an item you are hankering for, he'll be delighted to accommodate your craving whenever possible.

Mussels with spinach, tomato, and chorizo in a white wine and garlic sauce

The calamari were also excellent - cooked perfectly, and the portion was quite large.

Fried Calamari

Yum, below are the delicious Blackened and Seared Scallops. Hungry yet??

Blackened Sea Scallops

Tomato Balsamic Shrimp

And who would have thought that Sweet Potato would make for a great crispy breading for these delectable shrimpl

The tuna below is typically a dinner entree served with sides, however Chef knew we all wanted to sample and sent out an appetizer sans sides for us! Yes, it was every bit as good as we thought it would be.

Pistachio Encrusted Tuna (typically an entree)

Tuna and Avocado Tartar

Burgers and Sandwiches at the Gelston House

There is quite a good sandwich menu with a wide array of items from burgers, paninis, lobster rolls, and tacos to be had!

Goodspeed Burger

I opted for the buttery good lobster rolls pictured below. And you can determine the level of butter you want on your roll, because it's served on the side. Simply drizzle on as much or as little as you want!

Rich and decadent these were the perfect size and chock full of lobster!
Lobster Rolls and French Fries

Fish Tacos with French Fries

Main Course at the Gelston House

My dining companions ordered more traditional entrees, most going with the seafood selections on the menu. But there are beef and chicken entrees to be had too! A delicious Filet Mignon, NY Stip, and Chicken Marsala!

Pictured below are our seafood entrees.

Chilean Sea Bass with Risotto

Word of note, the scampi was reported to have a bit of heat and spice. Not overly so, but a little kick none the less!

Shrimp and Lobster Scampi

Dessert at the Gelston House

Most of us opted for the made on premise ice cream. I went for the sweet peach that had bits of real fruit nestled in the cold creamy goodness. Definitely try the ice cream on your visit!

Made on premise ice cream
Flavors: Mango, Tiramisu, Chocolate, Peach, Peppermint and more...!!

Crème Brûlée

And somehow I managed to fit one more bite of this incredibly moist and delicious Carrot Cake.

Carrot Cake

The Gelston House in East Haddam CT is worth the visit and the drive! A perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon enjoying great food with a picturesque view of the Connecticut River. Stop in before attending the show at the Goodspeed Opera, and come back after the show for more!

There's so much to do in the area...the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat cruise, antique shopping, touring Gillette Castle, and so much more.

This picturesque town is New England at its best and the view from the Gelston House can't be beat!
