The Legend behind The Curse of William Fly

Nix's Mate is one of the smaller islands in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. In 1726, upon his arrest, officials brought pirate captain William Fly to Boston, where he was executed. His body was then gibbetted on Nix's Mate to serve as a warning to sailors not to turn to piracy. Before his execution, Fly famously scolded the hangman for incorrectly securing the noose, then retied it himself. His body, with those of two other pirates, is buried on the island. Pleading not guilty to the end, one pirate predicted the Island would sink into the sea to prove his innocence. Since 1803, the island has disappeared each day in high tide.

Wine on Nine in New Haven CT 2015

#WineOn9

Wine On 9 - 2015

New Haven’s Historic 9th Square district is certainly the downtown destination for New Haven, featuring great art, food, music, and cultural activities.

Best of all, this eclectic neighborhood provides the backdrop for First Fridays On9 in New Haven.

One of my favorite On 9 events returned this year on November 6, 2015! The Wine On Nine "wine crawl" through the Ninth Square where we had the chance to visit and meet various merchants, restaurants, and organizations in the 9th Square New Haven.

Welcome to Wine On 9

At just $15.00 a ticket, this was indeed a bargain and all who participated received a keepsake wine glass for sampling, a map of the participating merchants in the neighborhood, and some delicious wine tastings from the Wine Thief.

First Fridays On9 are open-house evenings featuring creative events that showcase the wide array of shops, restaurants, marketplaces, homes, and cultural centers in the historic 9th Square neighborhood.
I gathered up what friends I could find and off we went for our little wine crawl.

Wine On 9

We did our very best to reach every stop - but unfortunately we missed a few. But everywhere we stopped we had fun and sampled some great wines.

Lets Meet Connecticut - #LetsMeetCT

Last weekend I had the opportunity to meet up with approximately 50 photographers and bloggers, most from the Connecticut area, but some from New York and New Jersey, in beautiful Essex CT to share some photography and social media tips, and capture the last of 2015's fall foliage.

Essex Connecticut is the idyllic New England town, located on the banks of the Connecticut River. It is home to charming Federal, Victorian, and Cape Cod homes, the Griswold Inn (the longest continuously operating inn in the U.S), and the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat. Settled in 1648, and incorporated in 1852, its thriving township consists of three villages, Centerbrook, Essex, and Ivoryton. [info compiled from Town of Essex CT at www.essexct.gov].

Early bird that I am, I decided to fuel up at the historic Griswold Inn before heading down to Essex Town Park for the meetup. I had a quick lunch of a bowl of Clam Chowder and a Pumpkin Pie Martini and listened to some Dixieland Jazz by Freight Train Five, who play most Sundays from 11:00am to 3pm for the Gris' Sunday Brunch enjoyment.

After lunch, I headed down to the Essex Town Park where I met up with our group for the first ever Let's Meet CT Meet Up!

Host Janievy Hilary (@neivy) hadn't arrived yet, but we were quickly welcomed by photographer Jesse Romano (follow him at @indue for AMAZING photography) who was kind enough to talk camera tips with us. (Jesse you'll be happy to know that today I traded in my humongous purse for a smaller one!)

Yup, that's me on the left with the suitcase sized purse below!!

It was great to meet some new friends, see some old friends, and finally meet some great photographers that I already follow, as well as find a few new ones! See the link at the end of this post for some amazing photographs from some talented artists.

And I absolutely love this picture that Wendy from CT Lifestyles took of me playing with the fallen leaves.

Here are some of the pictures I took from our self-directed Essex Walking Tour for #LetsMeetCT

Because our meet up was the day after Halloween so many residents had their fun decor up!

The group moved in a few different directions without any set itinerary, and after strolling through downtown Essex, Gina from WanderLaughs Travel and I headed back to the Griswold Inn for some cocktails where we were later joined by Greg and Wendy from CTLifestyles for a quick bite to eat by the Gris' roaring fireplace.

For more really great pictures of our day

follow the fun on Instagram at #LetsMeetCT

and get out there and take some pictures of the state YOU live in!

*****

Are you from CT? Where would you recommend we hold a meet up?

Not from CT? Where would you recommend people visit in your state?

I'd love to hear about it in the comments below!

Recipe: Pumpkin Soup for the Holidays

It's time for Pumpkin Soup!

Pumpkin soup is a great way to welcome the cooler weather in New England. I mean, really, who doesn't love a big ole' bowl of pumpkin love. It's the perfect comfort food.

Now that the fall season is in full swing, soups are a go-to staple for lunch and dinner.

Don't just settle for away from your typical Tomato and Butternut Squash soups.

Let's try something new with a delicious (and healthy!) Pumpkin soup. Below, is a simple recipe from Gaea Olive Oil’s Chief Wellness Officer, Vicky Vlachonis.

This soup is a tasty meal for all occasions and the perfect healthy addition to a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

A few healthy benefits to note: Pumpkins are high in Vitamin A, and can even aid in weight loss. Gaea’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil is high in antioxidants and has an array of health benefits including anti-inflammatory and heart-health properties.

Pumpkin Soup

SERVES 4

Ingredients:

•4 cups pumpkin, peeled, seeded, and chopped
•1 cup red pepper, seeded and chopped
•1 cup zucchini, chopped
•1 cup yellow onions, chopped
•1⁄2 cup celery with stem, chopped
•6 to 7 tablespoons Gaea extra-virgin olive oil
•1⁄2 cup toasted pumpkin seeds
•1 cup crumbled goat cheese (or hard cheese)
•2 teaspoons fresh grated ginger

Directions:

Place the chopped pumpkin, zucchini, onions and celery in a large soup pot and add the vegetable stock until at least half the vegetables are covered. Bring the broth to a boil then let simmer over low heat for 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the soup cool to room temperature before pureeing vegetable and broth in a blender. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of olive oil to the pureed mixture and return the soup to the pot and let simmer for 15 minutes before serving in individual soup bowls. Top each serving with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the pumpkin seeds, crumbled cheese, and ginger.
