Mecha Noodle Bar in New Haven - Time to #EatRamen

Social Media Promotion:

Slurping Encouraged at Mecha Noodle Bar!

You have to love a restaurant whose tag line is "Slurping Encouraged", right??? So, when Wendy and Greg from Connecticut Lifestyles contacted me about attending a foodie meetup at New Haven's newest restaurant, Mecha Noodle Bar on Crown Street I said, YES, count me in!

Rounding out our food squad were Natasha from Natasha Explores World and Ron from Ron's Food Trips. But I have to be honest and admit that this was my very first time visiting a "noodle" bar so it was a doubly fun experience for me! I loved the interior decor - with some neat ceiling sculptures created by varying lengths of wood planks that cast a beautiful ambient shadow around the room.

We arrived at around 6:00 p.m. on a rainy Tuesday night, and already there was a line to be seated! Seating is on a 'first come-first served' basis and no reservations are accepted so be sure you plan accordingly when you visit. Luckily, a large table opened up within a few minutes and we were seated very quickly. In addition to a large bar area there's also a community table to sit at which looked really fun and seating appeared to turn over quickly. Overall, this is really THE place to meet up with friends or family or a group from work. The best part of meeting with a group? You can share and sample a bunch of items from their menu.

That's my favorite way to visit a restaurant, especially one with a cuisine that I'm not familiar with - because the shared plate ordering gives me the opportunity to try a lot of different things and find out what I like! Lucky for me - I loved just about everything we tried - so it was a win win!

Cocktails were fun at Mecha Noodle Bar with names like Yuzu 2.0, Love Potion No. 9 and Stevie's Wonder! Of course, being a total 60's child I had to go with the Love Potion, and yep! Loved it!

Love Potion No. 9.
Madame Ruth made this batch with mizu shochu, aperol, lychee,
lemongrass, and garnished with a lime

Left: Stevie's Wonder
Right: Love Potion No. 9

And here's something out of the box - or should I say in the box...called Way of the Warrior!

Way of The Warrior
 mizu shochu, bushido sake,
st. germain, velvet falernum

Next we moved on to some appetizers and small bites from their "Snacks" menu, trying the Kale Salad, KFC (Korean Fried Chicken), Saigon Egg Rolls, Red Oil Dumplings, Mushroom Dumplings, and Firecracker Wings.

Red Oil Dumplings
pork, shrimp, sichuan vinegar, cilantro

Kale Salad
fresh and crispy kale, miso vinaigrette, avocado

Roasted Mushroom Dumplings
brown butter miso, arugula

Saigon Egg Rolls
ground pork, lettuce wrap, nuoc mam, mint

Firecracker Wings
togarashi, tomarind, sichuan peppercorn

Korean Fried Chicken - KFC
 gochujang, pickled daikon-carrots, kewpie

Favorites? OMG - The dumplings! Both the Red Oil and Mushroom were absolutely delicious. Another favorite believe it or not was the Kale Salad. I usually tire quickly with Kale finding it a bit fibrous...but these were tender and oh soooo good - I would definitely order this salad again!

Next we moved on to the Ramen each ordering a different kind, from the Paitan Chicken, to the Spicy Miso, and the Vegetarian selection. Greg even ordered a "Chef's Choice" - filled with a bit of everything!

Here's a look at my Spicy Misu. It definitely packed a little heat on the palate - but not so hot that it couldn't be enjoyed.

Spicy Misu Ramen
red miso, chashu, mushrooms, chili oil

We ended the night with bubble teas and hot sake - and packed up some leftovers.

Mecha Noodle Bar is a great addition to New Haven dining. It's a fun and casual spot to gather with friends and enjoy some great food and drink and good company. A parking garage is right next door, and you may even be able to find some on street parking!

Mecha Noodle Bar is close to much of Yale and a few blocks from the 9th Square.

Best of all - it's easy on the wallet with items ranging from $6.00 to $14.00. Service was fast paced, knowledgeable and friendly and offered up some great recommendations on items to try.

Be sure you visit them soon! And, remember - slurping is encouraged!

Silver Oak Wine Dinner at Foxwood's VUE 24

Social Media Promotion:

Vue 24 and Silver Oak Cellars Wine Pairing Dinner
at Foxwoods Resort Casino

Around this time of year the hustle and bustle of the holidays starts kicking in and I begin to feel a little overwhelmed and a wee bit overextended. So, when Foxwood's Resort Casino's marketing team reached out to us with an invite to their upcoming Silver Oak Napa Valley Wine Dinner at Vue 24, I jumped at the chance!!

It just so happened to fall on the Thursday before my birthday so it offered the perfect opportunity to relax over a delicious dinner and discover some new California wines, that just may end up in someone's Christmas stocking! (shhhhh - it's our little secret, right??)

Vue 24 is located on the 24th floor of Foxwood's Grand Pequot Tower - and the panoramic views from their dining room are unparalleled. We arrived just in time to catch this beautiful sunset.

In spite of not being true "wine connoisseurs" we love these wine pairing dinners! You see, these dinners are quite informative to even the novice wine lover - and allows an opportunity to learn more about wines in general. What a great way to receive some tips for pairing wines for upcoming dinner parties or holiday gatherings!

This was the first time we sat in the lounge area of Vue 24 and there was quite a different vibe. A bit more casual and relaxed than the formal dining area, it was none the less an intimate and fun area to partake in a luxurious dinner and dining experience.

Hors d'oeuvres  were pre-set when we arrived along with a delicious 'not too sweet - and not too dry' - a Brut, Roederer Estate, from Anderson Valley, California. We toasted to a great evening of delicious wine, fun conversation, and amazing food!

Cheers!
Winemaker Notes: All the Anderson Valley wines are grown on the Estate, and each year, the winemaker selects a portion of the best wines for aging in Center of France oak casks. Aged from one to three years, wines from this reserve cellar are added to the blend, creating a multi-vintage cuvee in the traditional Roederer style, known for its body, finesse and depth of flavor.   Source: wine.com

Our starters for the evening included some delicious crostinis and cracked wheat flatbread with salmon, goat cheese, and beef with pickled onions. So tasty and the perfect start!

First Course Vue 24 Silver Oaks Wine Pairing Dinner

For our first course we had some delicious Pan Seared Atlantic Scallops with a Crispy Cured Pork Belly Spiral, prepared with Roasted Braeburn Apples, Petite Greens and a Connecticut Cider Beurre Blanc sauce drizzle.

Pan Seared Scallops at Vue 24

This was paired with a Napa Valley California Chardonnay from Napa Cellars.

Winemaker Notes: Classic Napa Valley Chardonnay characteristics unique to this region with aromas of fresh floral notes, toasted apple strudel, tangerine rind, and pear blossoms to excite the senses.  Source: wine.com

Main Course Boeuf Duo (loosely translated to Beef Duo)

Our main course was a delicious, perfectly cooked Shallot Butter Roasted Filet Mignon along with a melt in your mouth Cabernet Braised Short Rib prepared atop a Vanilla Scented Parsnip Puree, with green Cress garnish, and a Demi-Glace.

Chef Michael Yaffe never disappoints at these events, developing the most delicious sauces with each course and offering patrons items that are not typically offered. The parsnip puree was a big hit at our table, and we overheard others voicing the same pleasure!

s hidden beneath the greens!

The main course was accompanied by our host winery's Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California. We loved this pairing - the Cabernet Sauvignon hit all the right notes with those delicious cuts of beef. It was bold and flavorful and our table voted this the best match of food and wine.

Winemaker Notes: An elegant representation of Napa Valley Cabernet from a cool vintage that presents an opaque garnet hue and reveals aromas of sandalwood and roasted meats. Flavors of vanilla, coffee beans and raspberries are buttressed by dusty tannins, firm acidity and a mouth-coating texture. Given proper cellaring, this wine should provide drinking pleasure through 2029. Source: wine.com

Finishing Dessert Course at Vue 24:

For our dessert course we were treated to a wonderful Pecan and Cranberry Tart with a Raspberry Sauce Garnish prepared by pastry chef extraordinaire, Franck Iglesias, who operates CAKE by Franck at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Pecan Tart at Vue 24

The dessert course was paired with my favorite of the night (you KNOW I love my wines sweet) a Chiarlo Moscato d’Asti Nivole. This wine paired nicely with the sweet and tart flavors of our dessert.

Winemaker Notes: A sweet, fragrant, lightly sparkling wine has vivid aromas and flavors of peach, apricot, grapefruit and sage on a light body with a delicate finish typical of Moscato d’Asti. Source: wine.com

If you have the opportunity, be sure to attend a wine pairing dinner at Vue 24 to enjoy some informative background and history about your soon to be favorite wines, wineries, and vineyards - and enjoy the delicious foods and flavors that one of Foxwood's finest restaurants has to offer.

Mohegan Sun Opens Second Hotel in Connecticut

Mohegan Sun Officially Unveils Second Hotel

The 400-Room Earth Tower

The all-new Earth Tower is now open to the public.
Mohegan Sun’s 400-room, 242,000 square-foot $139 million Earth Tower, celebrated its grand opening this morning, with a special ribbon cutting event. Mohegan Sun President and General Manager, Ray Pineault and Mohegan Tribal Chairman, Kevin Brown “Red Eagle,” kicked the ceremony off by thanking all of the men and women who worked diligently over the last year and a half to design and construct a truly beautiful addition to Mohegan Sun’s property.

Mohegan Tribal Chairman, Kevin “Red Eagle” Brown, Mohegan Sun President and GM, Ray Pineault, Mohegan Chief, Lynn Malerba, along with Governor, Dannel Malloy, Lieutenant Governor, Nancy Wyman, Senator, Richard Blumenthal and Congressman, Joe Courtney and many more, all took part in the special ceremony Friday morning to welcome the new expansion.

A second hotel at Mohegan Sun’s flagship destination was something that both the Mohegan Tribal Council and Mohegan Sun Senior Leadership have long anticipated, since putting original plans on hold back in 2008, due the economic downturn. Chairman Brown spoke to those hard decisions as well as the impact that this long awaited second hotel has already had, stating, “for us, this new hotel does represent the ability to have more room nights and stays, right here at the casino and that has already, just in these early days, proven itself out with the demand that has been placed on this new hotel. But it’s also important to the state, because it represents the 2,000 jobs as this went through the construction phase and represents 200 permanent jobs, as we extend our team members, into this facility, and keep it up and running.”

To help usher in the new hotel and speak to the importance of the strong relationship between Mohegan Sun and the State of Connecticut, additional special guests included Governor, Malloy, Lt. Governor, Nancy Wyman, Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Joe Courtney. U.S. State Senator, Richard Blumenthal, in particular, concluded his remarks by stating, “In Washington, when I talk to colleague’s about what is happening to the Native American tribes in their state, they look, with reverence, and some envy, at what you have done here. It is a great American success story, not just in dollars and cents, not just in spectacular building, or in entertainment and enjoyment that you have brought to countless people, but in the triumph of hope, and vision over obstacles, that would have deterred others.”

Overcoming obstacles certainly was fitting, as over the course of the last couple of years, Mohegan Sun has turned away around 1 million hotel rooms in the iconic, 1,200-room Sky Tower. And with much excitement about the new expansion, and finally being able to provide guests with such a well-executed second hotel, Mohegan Sun President & GM, Ray Pineault, thanked all of the contributions and hard work as well as commenting that, “this new hotel gives us a better opportunity to serve the incredible demand we have witnessed in our twelve hundred room, SkyTower and really allows us to welcome in even more guests in and outside of the state, with many looking to make multi-night visits.” And Mohegan Sun’s President concluded the event with, “what started out in 1996 as a 170,000 square-foot Casino with just a smaller sized free music venue, and a few restaurants and shops, is now one of the largest, most impressive, all-encompassing gaming, entertainment and resort destinations in the world.”

Earth Tower’s design was modeled after the original Sky Tower, with the help of Architect group, Kohn Pederson Fox Associates. Sitting along the Thames River, featuring 400 luxurious rooms, including 39 suites, the new hotel brings about some unique new features for guests.

The lobby is home to various lounging areas along with Bean and Vine Café & Wine Bar, where guests can grab breakfast and a coffee in the morning, and relax with friends over a glass of wine or beer in the evening, all with a beautiful view. Located on the ground level, in front of the Tower, the outdoor Earth Tower Terrace will feature gas fire pits and satellite bar & food service, when weather permits. The space can also be utilized for private functions, including wedding receptions, anniversaries and more.

Each room and suite will also be home to advanced in-room technology, including ultra-fast Wi-Fi, intelligent thermostats, dual-line telephones.

Other amenities in Earth Tower include an all-new spa, fitness center and pool.  All parking is free at Mohegan Sun as well, including hotel valet!

The access to Earth Tower is provided by way of two impressively designed connectors as well, allowing entry from the Winter entrance and from the original hotel lobby.

Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF), out of New York, was the architectural firm of record. KPF was also the master architect for Mohegan Sun’s 1,200-room Sky Tower, which opened in 2002.  A/Z Corporation, with headquarters locally in North Stonington, Connecticut, was the general contractor for the project and has a long history of having completed various projects at Mohegan Sun.

Shell and Bones Oyster Bar and Grill

Social Media Promotion:

New Haven Restaurant Week at Shell and Bones Oyster Bar and Grill

In the historic City Point neighborhood of New Haven, is a fairly new restaurant, Shell and Bones Oyster Bar and Grill, that opened in early spring of 2015.

Shell and Bones - Hot Apple Cider with Brandy

Overlooking Long Island Sound, at the site of the Pequonnock Yacht Club, Shell and Bones menu focuses on fresh seafood and steak - and all items are prepared on premise. Those familiar with the area will remember the location as site of the former Chart House, and more recently, Sage Bar & Grill. New owners, Daniel Kay, Marc Knight and Robert Bolduc (of Geronimo Bar & Grill) have completely renovated the ground floor restaurant, with a light and airy design and contemporary nautical theme that features the restaurant's amazing waterfront views, with a large waterside deck with firepits extending the short New England patio season well into fall.

I recently attended a social media event as a kick off to New Haven Restaurant Week - I just love that New Haven features both a spring and fall restaurant week so patrons can experience different seasonal menus and specialties.

At this fall New Haven Restaurant Week cocktail event we were were treated to a wide array of Chef Arturo Franco Camacho's specialties.

Red Pepper and Olive Deviled Eggs

Clam Fritters with House Made Tartar Sauce

Sun Dried Tomato Bites

Oh my goodness - everything was so delicious! We can't wait to return!

Here is what Shell and Bones has on the menu for you for their Fall version of #NHRW!

Be sure you visit Shell and Bones Oyster Bar and Grill for New Haven Restaurant Week - or any night of the week, for that matter!
